Landroid, the duo made up of Cooper Gillespie and Greg Gordon will be releasing their debut album in September. Today, we’re premiering the entrancing new video for the group’s single “Yellow Sea.” The song has a beautifully melancholy tone with melodic synthesizer lines and Gillespie’s saccharine-sweet vocals.
The video centers around a little girl that’s largely ignored by her parents. After attempting to put on a puppet show for the two disinterested and distracted adults, she runs out of the house to a sandbox. There, she’s pulled into a portal that transports her into another universe. When her parents call the police because their child is missing, he quickly jots down a note: “Things you ignore tend to disappear.”
“‘Yellow Sea’ is about transitioning from this dimension to the next,” said Gillespie. “A lot of people in our lives passed away this year. This song is a meditation on the hereafter. For the ‘Yellow Sea’ video, we worked with one of our favorite directors, Patrick Flaherty. He helped us realize the concept visually. We imagine we’re all children in the netherworld. We found this amazing young actress named Carly Bateman who brought the idea to life. In the video, she journeys through a portal to the afterlife. It’s not scary after the initial shock of her transition. There’s actually a lot of wonder and joy on the other side.”
Gillespie and Gordon have played in various bands in California and recently made the move to Landers, CA just outside of Joshua Tree. There, they’ve transitioned their sound into one inspired by the desolation and isolation of the desert. In the case of “Yellow Sea,” the obvious reference point is Beach House with a touch more psychedelia. Their debut album is called Imperial Dunes and it’s out on September 13 on their own label, Mojave Beach Records.
