Red Hearse is a music project founded by Jack Antonoff, Sam Dew and Mark Spears, a.k.a. Sounwave. The trio debuted their three-track release last month via RCA Records. According to Stereogum, the group recently dropped two accompanying videos of the title track “Red Hearse” and “Half Love” starring special guest Annie Clark (stage name St. Vincent).
It’s not the first collaboration between Antonoff and St. Vincent. Their first musical spark dates back to St. Vincent’s MASSEDUCATION, which won the Best Rock song at 2019 Grammy Awards.
St. Vincent makes an impressive appearance in the music video of “Half Love.” She dresses up like a formidable woman in a purple outfit, carrying a long stick while walking to a closing grocery store which has an “Exit Only” sign. Vincent breaks the front door fearlessly and ignores the store employees (played by Dew and Sounwave), just as the lyrics sing “I don’t waste no time with you.” She then encounters dusty package of Red Hearse action figures and picks them up, before directly walking to the sales clerk (played by Antonoff), where she prepares to pay with a check. The last scene ends with a view of Vincent who is walking back a red hearse. The whole visual adds the weirdness to the whole track, as well as echoes with the other music video of “Red Hearse.”
As bizarre as the video for “Half Love” is, the story in “Red Hearse” seems to follow along on a similar continuity. In this video, a woman wearing a red coat rolls out of a red hearse and breaks the front door of a nail store in midnight. The woman in the red leather coat is domineering to the point where it harms the three workers (played by Antonoff, Dew and Sounwave) in the store, as she manipulates their will, so they provide her with preferential service. At the end of the video, the woman leaves the store and walks back to her red hearse, leaving the same package of Red Hearse action figures in a chair.
