mxdwn has been covering the slightly bizarre story of A$AP Rocky’s arrest and seemingly indefinite detention in the Swedish court system over the last few weeks but today this story took its most surreal turn. According to ABC News, after lobbying from Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, none other than the President of the United States has taken up the cause to free A$AP Rocky. As a music site, it’s hard to believe this publication is posting a tweet from President Donald J. Trump, but here it is.
Just spoke to @KanyeWest about his friend A$AP Rocky’s incarceration. I will be calling the very talented Prime Minister of Sweden to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky. So many people would like to see this quickly resolved!

Apparently Trump, using some of his trademark online verbiage, will be contacting the “very talented” Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven. A$AP Rocky, a New York City based rapper and member of the
UPDATE (7/20): According to the President’s Twitter account, he spoke with Löfven. In the post from 6:52 AM this morning, Trump says that the Prime Minister assured him that A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly. In an even more bizarre twist in what is becoming one of 2019’s strangest music news stories, the president said he’s “personally vouch for his bail, or an alternative….”
In the call, which CNN reports lasted about 20 minutes, Trump was told by Löfven that the country’s government wasn’t able to influence the results of the court’s decisions. Yesterday, the Swedish court ruled that the rapper could be held for up to another week while authorities determine whether to charge him with a crime. He was arrested at the beginning of July for an alleged assault and was then forced to cancel his tour while he was jailed. Stay tuned for more because Trump also promised that he would speak again with the Swedish PM in the next 48 hours.
Just had a very good call with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven who assured me that American citizen A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly. Likewise, I assured him that A$AP was not a flight risk and offered to personally vouch for his bail, or an alternative….
