Charli XCX recently released the third single, “Gone”, for her upcoming third studio album, Charli. The song, which is a collaboration with Christine and the Queens, follows “Blame It on Your Love” featuring breakout star Lizzo, and “1999”, a collaboration with fellow pop star Troye Sivan. The album will be released on September 13th through both Asylum Records in the US and Atlantic Records UK in the United Kingdom. The music video for “Gone” was released in conjunction with the release of the single on all major streaming services.
The video, directed by Colin Solal Cardo, starts with Charli XCX and Chris of Christine and the Queen tied to a car with rope. The first half of the video is mostly spent cutting between Charli struggling against her ties on the back of the car, Chris fighting her ties on the other side, and the two singing and dancing with each other in an open space, free of any restraints. The flashing lights, bouncy electronic production, and the pair’s excellent performances keep the energy up in spite of the two artists’ restraints. Eventually, Chris escapes her ties as her verse begins, and she moves to untie Charli. They sing “Why do we keep when the water runs?” as it starts to rain. As the bridge begins, the rain becomes fire and sparks as the production become more sparse. In Daft Punk-esque electronically cut up vocal runs, the pair continue to explore the freedom they so desire in lyrics like the final line, “Don’t search me in here, I’m already gone, baby”.
Charli XCX and Christine and the Queens have both been busy in the first half of 2019. Charli XCX has been rocking the festival circuit all summer, including a rescheduled NYC performance this past June after the Sunday cancellations at the Governor’s Ball festival. Christine and the Queens have also been touring all over the world on the back of her critically acclaimed 2018 album Chris.
