Since their breakup in 2011, Vivian Girls seemed over for good. Now, however, the group is back with brand new music and more skill than ever before. The trio, comprised of Katy Goodman, Ali Koehler and Cassie Ramone, have released a new single for the first time in 8 years. The track, titled “Sick,” is the first song off of their newly announced album Memory. The project will be the group’s fourth full length album and be the first since 2011’s Share The Joy. From the track already released it seems like the band is more aggressive and less apologetic than ever before. “Sick” is a powerful indie rock track that easily qualifies as one of the group’s more engulfing songs. The new Memory album will be released on September 20, just a few weeks before the girls start their fall tour in the US.
Vivian Girls were a female indie rock group that prided themselves on combining punk rock influences with sounds more accessible to pop fans. By pulling from multiple genres, the band created some incredibly unique works, starting with their debut album Vivian Girls. The album’s song “Where Do You Run To” remains one of the group’s most popular and does a great job of capturing the sound of the Vivian Girls (although that particular song was written by Frankie Rose, who’s not a part of this reunion). After three more years and two more albums, however, the group stopped releasing new projects. The band would officially break up a few years later, stating that they wanted to explore other musical projects and were ready to move forward from the band.
During the next few years, the girls would pursue different groups and sounds, with Ramone working on The Babies and Goodman forming the duo La Sera. As it turns out though, the band’s breakup was only temporary and they are ready to put out new material once again. Memory will be released via Polyvinyl, who also released the group’s last album, Share The Joy. In celebration of this release, Polyvinyl is going to be putting out reissues of the band’s first two albums, which have been out of circulation for some time. The reissues will be put out alongside Memory on September 20 and are available for pre-order now. The new “Sick” single and full tracklist for Memory can be found below.
