After a hiatus spanning nearly three decades the London based duo, Shakespears Sister, are coming back strong with a new video, plans for both an album and a new EP as well as a brand new podcast titled “Ride Again: The Shakespears Sister Story.” According to the press release sent to mxdwn, there was a falling out between creative collaborators Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit around 26 years ago that lead to the extended break.
The new EP is set for the fall. Fans of the band don’t have to wait much longer for a new album though, as they are releasing their new album Singles Party this week, which will include some older Shakespears Sister hits like “Stay,” “You’re History”, “Hello (Turn Your Radio On)” and “I Don’t Care” as well as some newer songs including “All the Queens’ Horses” and “C U Next Tuesday.”
The video for “All The Queens Horses” is a playful jab at Fahey and Detroit’s past history. It is framed as a black and white western with older footage of the band spliced throughout. Near the beginning of the video the women are shown holding hands before people tear them apart from each other, symbolic of their falling out. The video is a loop of them at the bar, one of the women as a bartender, the other as a patron, having a conversation, presumably about their past, before they finally share a drink together, perform together, and leave the bar holding hands.
Even though the song is about a failed love affair, it is also a loose explanation of Fahey and Detroit’s history together as well. NME explains that the chorus “‘All the queen’s horses/ All the queen’s men/They couldn’t put us back together again” can absolutely be applied to the “chequered history” that the women share.
The feud was so intense during the entire 26 year break, the women did not speak once. Detroit told NME that she did not believe the reunion would ever happen and explained how they were finally able to bury the hatchet.
“It started last year when my husband got a text from Peter [Loraine, Fascination Records head honcho – who also ran the Bananarama fan club as a teenager] saying: ‘Would Marcy be free to talk to us about something?’. He didn’t say what, but I assumed it was about Shakespears Sister.” Detroit said “They talked about meeting Siobhan and that happened last May when we first met after 26 years.”
