Clutch seems to be showing no sign of slowing down in 2019. They released a music video for “Ghoul Wrangler” from Book of Bad Decisions earlier this year, as previously reported by mxdwn, and now they have released their second cover for the upcoming Weathermaker Vault Series, as reported by The PRP.
The Weathermaker Vault Series will be a collection of covers that Clutch will release over the summer, with some being covers of their own songs that they weren’t happy with, as reported by Metal Injection. The first released single in the Weathermaker Vault Series was a cover of Cactus’ version of Willie Dixon’s “Evil” and this time they are taking on ZZ Top’s “Precious & Grace.”
The iconic riff in the beginning of Clutch’s version is practically identical to ZZ Top’s and as a whole, Clutch does a great job at keeping the integrity of the original. The instrumental track is pretty much identical all the way through, but, obviously, the sound quality and production on Clutch’s cover is better thanks to modern technology. The voice is where things really differ. Of course, it is hard to replicate such a unique voice, but, it was a pretty good effort and is more of a love letter instead of trying to outright imitate it. The cover is funky and groovy, which is really all anyone can ask for from a cover of a ZZ Top song.
The video is entertaining, especially considering it is only a lyrics video. The lyrics are shown in the style of neon signs, with other neon signs corresponding to the lyrics in the background. The video does a good job of capturing the feel of the early 1970s with the neon signs, the overall aesthetic and the model of cars they chose.
Keep an eye out for more of Clutch’s covers this summer from the Weathermaker Vault Series. Clutch’s cover of “Precious & Grace” is available to be purchased or streamed on a variety of platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deezer and iTunes .
