ZONAL, the collaboration between Justin Broadrick and Kevin Martin, has been officially signed to Relapse Records. Coinciding with this announcement, the group released two brand new tracks titled “No Version” and “Cage Version.” The duo create heavy, bass and noise focused music that intends to engulf listeners in a wall of sound. Broadrick and Martin come together to create eerie soundscapes unlike anything else. With the announcement of ZONAL signing to Relapse Records, the label also released the news that the duo would be putting out a full length album with the label. The record is set to come out in the fall of this year and will be the debut of the group.
While ZONAL is a newer collaboration, Broadrick and Martin have worked together on various projects in the past. The two previously formed the group Techno Animal, which was an ambient focused electronic group. The two will pick up where they left off with their previous collaborative efforts, attempting to bring their sound to whole new levels with ZONAL. The two released singles show the duo’s attempts to show just that, giving fans a taste of what to expect from the full length album. “No Version” and “Cage Version” are both brutal tracks that incorporate elements of noise rock and electronic music together. Using strong basslines and crunchy production, the duo created two tracks that are incredibly good at creating moods and tones that envelop listeners. Despite the intensity and roughness of some aspects of the track, “Cage Version” is a great example of Broadrick and Martin creating a calm environment and song using chaotic styles. Both tracks are great examples of the two can do moving forward and can be found below. The full ZONAL album is set to be released via Relapse Records in fall 2019.
