Since the original show Veronica Mars ended in 2007, fans have been waiting for the return of the American teen noir mystery drama television show. Twelve years later, the TV show is running once again, with eight new episodes airing on Hulu now. Veronica Mars (film) was distributed theatrically in the theater besides the home-reviewing version, released in 2014.
This morning, Speedy Ortiz’s Sad13 (Sadie Dupuis) also unleashed a cover of the drama’s theme track, Stereogum reports. Sad13 posted her preference for the show and a music video cover on Twitter, saying “it’s my birthday so you’re legally obligated to enjoy this song & video cover of my favorite opening credits sequence,” while mentioning Veronica Mars and key creative roles.
According to Stereogum, the original theme song, Dandy Warhols’ “We Used To Be Friends,” is covered by The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde. Through an official teaser video, Kristen Bell (aka the eponymous character) and screenwriter Rob Thomas are joking around via FaceTime, but they are quite serious about Chrissie Hynde’s version of the theme song.
In the 36-second-video, Sad13 wears different wigs that change with each scene and puts herself into multiple characters within Veronica Mars. The original theme song was created by frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor during the time when he had a friendship break-up with one of his friends, which is supposed to be traumatic. Through Sad13’s gnarled production and distinctive reinterpretation, “We Used To Be Friends” becomes an entertaining gig that leads us to forget the trauma. Enjoy Sad13’s version below.
