Miami sludge metal band Torche is gearing up to release their fifth full-length studio album. Admission is set to release on July 12 via Relapse, but new single “Admission,” which serves as the title cut of the album, premieres alongside with a new music video ahead of time. The group also updates their September tour dates of West Coast cities, Theprp.com reports.
Under the circumstance that Eric Hernandez of noise-rockers Wrong joins the band’s core trio of guitarist Jonathan Nuñez, singer/guitarist Steve Brooks and drummer Rick Smith, Admission is created by inspiration in an “in-the-moment” way. “It was something we dealt with in a very in-the-moment way, there’s no time to think, we’re just doing it,” says Nuñez. “This, in one record, fully encompasses up and down, heavy, sad, angry or angsty, happy, some sci-fi optimism; there’s all sorts of things.”
Unlike most misanthropic metal rock, the title track “Admission” sets a tone of expressing personal feelings and remains grounded from the beginning. Brooks sings on the aggressive and heavy opener, “Where am I to go? / Up from here,” with rumbling rhythm. Brooks’s vocal melody suddenly creates an atmospheric wave with riffling guitar and various pedals sounds. The heavy and shimmering music runs into climax when Brooks sings, “I said it’s fine/ You will survive/ Yes, I will pretend/ I don’t need to love again.” The video serves as a perfect companion, which visually captures the delays and heavy sounds. The whole track gives no sense of compromising but provides comfort within the dark-and-purple background and heavy rock bass. Check out the video below.
