Brittany Howard is gearing up for her solo debut. The singer has announced her new solo album, Jaime, will be released September 20 via ATO Records. She has also released the album’s lead single “History Repeats,” which can be heard below. In a press release, Howard discussed the meaning of the song, stating it “is as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species. Our times of success may propel us forward, but our repeating failures hold us back from evolving into harmony.” Take a listen to it below.
The album includes 11 tracks and the album’s title refers to Howard’s sister, who shaped her as a person and taught her how to write poetry and play the piano. She died of cancer when Howard was a teenager. Howard goes on to say while the album is named after her sister, it is not about her. “[The album is] about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.” See the full tracklist below.
In support of the album, Howard will be going on a small intimate tour across North America with headlining shows and festival sets at Austin City Limits and Atlanta’s Afropunk Festival. Tickets for her headlining shows will go on sale Friday, June 28 at 10 am local time. See her full itinerary below.
Howard is a member of the Grammy-award winning band Alabama Shakes, which some of the members worked on Howard’s album. The band won a Grammy for Best American Roots Performance of “Killer Diller Blues” last year. Their last studio effort was 2015’s Sound & Color. They were last featured on the soundtrack to HBO’s Big Little Lies starring Nicole Kidman and Resse Witherspoon in 2017.
