Scottish musician Benjamin John Power might be most well-known as half of electronic-experimental duo Fuck Buttons, but he’s also done some great work as Blanck Mass. That project has a new album coming out in August and today a new song from the record has been released. Over its six-minute runtime, the song melds and morphs through different movements, all the way presenting an ominous vibe that’s still somehow catchy.
“‘No Dice’ is about denial,” said Power. “It’s the voice in the back of your head stopping you from moving forward, the separation between your head and your heart.” Check out “No Dice” below:
Animated Violence Mild will be released on August 16 on acclaimed experimental-music label Sacred Bones, Powers’ third LP for the label after releasing its debut on Mogwai’s Rock Action Records. The last Blanck Mass record came in 2017 as the wonderful World Eater, which was one of the year’s best albums, earning the High Fidelity distinction on this site. The previous single that was released from this album is “House Vs. House,” which features an uplifting synthesizer line that gives it an anthemic quality.
Powers has also announced tour dates for Blanck Mass. He’ll start the tour this fall in Boston at Great Scott, moving down the East Coast and through the Great Lakes region. So far the dates end in early October on the west coast, including a show at Zebulon in Los Angeles on 10/5.
