The Hold Steady has officially announced their upcoming album, Thrashing Thru The Passion. The project will be the New York rock band’s seventh full length album, following up 2014’s Teeth Dreams. The project is due to be released later this year, on August 16. Alongside this announcement, The Hold Steady released a brand new track from the upcoming album. The song is titled “Denver Haircut” and features the kind of strong narrative that fans of The Hold Steady have been accustomed to hearing in their music. One of the most significant factors of The Hold Steady’s musical style is the band’s commitment to telling stories through their songs, with “Denver Haircut” being no exception.
The Hold Steady was founded in the early 2000s in New York City. The band’s first major release was 2004’s Almost Killed Me, but the group was brought to a larger audience with their 2016 project. The album that got them there was titled Boys and Girls in America and was The Hold Steady’s first placement on the Billboard 200 chart, peaking at number 124. One of the more popular tracks from the project was the song “Stuck Between Stations.” From there the group’s next album, Stay Positive, peaked at number 30 on the Billboard 200 chart as the band enjoyed wider mainstream success. Since then, the band has released two more full length albums and are now ready to put out another.
The newly announced Thrashing Thru The Passion project is the band’s first new album in five years, the longest span of time between two albums since the group started. For a while now fans have been waiting for a new album from The Hold Steady, and now they only have a few months left to go. The new “Denver Haircut” single tells the story of a man wandering the city at night. The man meets somebody throughout his time and spends the night with them, only to be left alone by the end of the song. The band stated that the track and its story kickstarted the creative process for the album, creating this song and letting the rest come from there.
