DJ Khaled’s brand-new album Father of Asahd fails to enter into the music territory of No.1 record on Billboard 200 chart. However, Tyler, The Creator’s album IGOR took the top spot. With 136,000 album units, DJ Khaled’s album peaks No.2, beaten by Tyler’s 165,000 equivalent album units.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. According to Consequence of Sound, DJ Khaled is unsatisfied about the counting of album units by Billboard, and he allegedly will sue Billboard for disqualifying his album sales. Khaled believes 100,000 album units in bundles sales that were sold with his energy drink were excluded by Billboard. In his words, the influential music group changed their original decision that includes albums from the energy drink to finally rule them out, while taking Tyler’s own bundle deal into counting data.
Billboard cites Khaled’s bundle purchase as “anomalies” in their statistics. Silvio Pietroluongo, SVP of charts and data development at Billboard, states the two albums had “an almost equal number of streams,” therefore Billboard has to count their bundle sales. And the publication reports Khaled’s album sales purchased with energy drink bundle won’t be added to the albums he sold due to “explicit attempts at encouraging mass purchases.” President of the Billboard, Deanna Brown adds, “In this particular instance, we saw an organization encouraging purchases among their members by promising them material and organizational benefits.”
“We dispute their decision on behalf of DJ Khaled and, frankly, every artist who is forced to navigate bundling an album download with an inexpensive item that still effectively represents their brand. It’s confusing and demeaning to the art,” Khaled’s management firm, Roc Nation, responds: “We’re obviously not fans of bundling, nor should anyone who cares about artists making music. But our hands are being forced by Billboard’s desperate, last-ditch effort to keep streaming from eliminating what’s left of music downloads.”
