Philly’s own alt-rock jam band, Dot Gov was born at Temple University’s Boyer College of Music in 2015. This year they are embarking on an EP release tour, and this show at Bourbon & Branch is the official release party for that EP, Ugliest Patch in the Quilt. Featuring an assortment of instruments, including violin and flute, they create a groove that feels familiar but also entirely their own. In fact, on the band’s website they describe their music as “comfortably unique, historically fun, and shockingly thorough.” They’re not on Spotify yet, but have “bootlegs” of their live performances posted on their website, which range from 6 and a half minutes to 13 minutes, proving their jam band status. As is custom, jam bands are best listened to live, and Dot Gov is no exception, dubbing their performances “brain-crafted, booty-approved.”
The Pool Boys is a surf-rock band from Philly creating chill grooves. They released their album Grouper in 2018, which shows off their specific brand of nerdy beach (or poolside if you will) rock. Check out “Cool Guy” and “When I Die/In Your Lungs” from that album. They also released their new single, “Hey Baby” in May. Back in February they put on a killer performance at Kung Fu Necktie where they jammed out and amped up the energy of their songs, which was super fun to watch. Plus, if you go to this show and really like them, or are bummed that you missed it, they’re coming back to Bourbon & Branch July 5th.
Retrocurlz remains a mystery to the internet, so we’ll just have to come to the show to see what they’re all about.
