Corinne Bailey Rae is a singer/songwriter from Leeds, England. You know her from her 2006 hit song, “Put Your Records On,” which was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. But what you might not know is that Rae is far from a one hit wonder. She won a GRAMMY in 2008 for her work on the album Rivers: The Joni Letters, a tribute album of cover songs written by Joni Mitchell. In addition, her cover of “Is This Love” from her The Love E.P. won a GRAMMY for best R&B Performance in 2012. Since then, she’s been writing and recording music for film and television, including the theme to Stan Lee’s Lucky Man, and “The Scientist,” for Fifty Shades Darker.
Even if you don’t tend to care about the accolades of an artist, Corinne Bailey Rae’s music is worth all of the praise. I have a deep love for her first album, which features her delicate take on R&B and thoughtful songwriting. My favorites from the album are “I’d Like To,” which is feel-good undiscovered summer anthem, “Till It Happens to You,” and “Trouble Sleeping.” In conclusion, Corinne Bailey Rae is the R&B queen that we have been sleeping on for far too long, and you should go watch her perform her sweet, soulful music at Union Transfer.
