Lower Dens Announce New Album The Competition For September 2019 Release, Debut Political New Track “Young Republicans”

Lower Dens are back and ready to tackle the current state of the world with their first new album in four years, their previous album Escape from Evil came out in 2015, as previously reported by mxdwn. Their latest single, “Young Republicans,” is from their upcoming album The Competition, which is slated to drop in early September, according to a press release sent to mxdwn.

The Competition, named so because competition “is the driving force of modern capitalism,” is an album that could “only come out in 2019,” per the press release sent to mxdwn. Lead singer and lyricist, Jana Hunter, who the press release points out uses both they/them and he/him pronouns, says that this album was based on the issues that shaped their life, for better or worse, and that these are some of the most vulnerable songs they have ever written.

“Young Republicans” is a tounge-in-cheek biting satire, that the press release describes as showcasing “a certain sect of society’s elite and their insatiable appetite to consume the lowerclasses both figuratively,” and the video directed by Raul Gonzo is a beautifully macabre piece of art, that is both frightening and flashy, perfectly brings the story woven through the lyrics to life.

The chorus painstakingly spells out the songs anti upper-class message with no holds barred; “The doors are locked, the curtains drawn/Our silken gloves and bonnets on/ You cannot pass/ You’ve no appetite/ To taste the burning flesh of men/ A supreme joy no doubt at all/ We lift our heads, we lift our heads/And see the world is burning.”

According to Hunter via the press release, each song is focused on de-conditioning ourselves from social norms, and learning how to “be people.” With the lyrics being macabre, biting, and sometimes “grotesque,” The Competition is a “cohesive, extraordinary whole.”
