Burial Releases Broody New Dance 12″ “Claustro”

Fans of Burial rejoice. After a long wait of over a decade, Burial is back with two new tracks. Burial, real name Will Bevan, has been quiet since the 2007 LP Untrue, the 2017 Pre Dawn/Indoors for 12” and a few collaborations here and there, but good things come to those who wait and new music will arrive on June 14th, according to Brooklyn Vegan.

The two songs are “Claustro” and “State Forest.” “Claustro” is available now on YouTube, and “State Forest” will be featured on Hyperdub June 14th.

According to the above Brooklyn Vegan article, “Claustro” was premiered on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Radio 6 Music show and she recalls a meeting with Burial during the “dawn of the dubstep era in London” where she was amazed that he could “move around freely in a room” due to the fact that he had anonymity because no one knew what he looked like and that “everything you hear in his music, you would find in his character.” Hobbs refers to Burial and his music as “magic.”

“Claustro” is very reminiscent of house music from the late 90s and early 2000s. The pulsing baseline with danceable beats and repetitive lyrics sung by a very robotic sounding woman would not be out of place in a rave in London during the turn of the century. The song clocks in at a little under six minutes and the beat drop is around three minutes in. There is another beat change around 5 minutes in and it really bumps up the nostalgia factor, this song truly would not sound out of place sandwiched between hits from C+C Music Factory and the Spice Girls.

The lyrics are simple “I want you/ I know you want me/ you can’t hide/ I can see it in your eyes/ I’m ready.” The simplistic lyrics really do have something nostalgic about them. After premiering the song on her Radio 6 Music show, Hobbs goes on to say that the song has a “perfect noir ending.”
