British electronic music producer Bonobo has just announced a new series of tours named after his 2017 track “Outliers,” which was part of the multi-instrumentalist’s last album Migration. Bonobo will be supported by various other DJs and musical acts such as TOKiMONSTA, Nosaj Thing, Quantic, Chrome Sparks, B.Traits and Catching Flies throughout the tour.
Migration incorporated a lot of world music traits into Bonobo’s down-tempo electronic style, which has been genre bending since his earliest adventures into acid jazz. During this latest release Bonobo reamed up with numerous artists including Rhye, Nick Murphy and Nicole Miglis.
“Bonobo furthers this stylistic integration, adopting jazz and world music influences,” Steve Bonitatibus wrote in a review for mxdwn.”By incorporating these more organic musical traditions, Green has managed to craft a sound that avoids every feeling canned – as is the case with many a DJs – yet still retains the rhythmic allure of electronic dance music.”
Although Bonobo made his career from jazz influenced downtempo music, which oftentimes serves as the antithesis for modern EDM, which is built around large bass heavy drops and pop buildups. He explains that Migration is where is mind state in terms of musical creativity is.
“I think it was a time and a place with the jazz thing in the early 2000s – back when I started there was more of a fusion of loop-based dance music with jazz influences, which is still a thing… but I don’t know if it’s where my head is at right now,” he explained in an interview with the Independent. “I’m always trying to find new things that I haven’t done before.”
