After four years, Apple announced that they are releasing a new and updated version of the iPod touch. The last version of an iPod touch was released in 2015. This new version will hold more storage than any previous iPod had the capacity to hold with 256 GB and the processor will be updated to an A10 fusion chip, the same one found in an iPhone 7. Apple stated that these changes will give the newest iPod touch two times faster CPU performance and three times faster graphics. Aside from these improvements, the newest iPod touch will remain relatively the same.
The new iPod touch will have some classic features that more recent iPhones now lack: a home button, camera, and headphone jack. Additionally, the camera and the bezeled four inch display on the 2015 model will be the same on the newest version of the iPod touch. However, with the updated processor and increase in storage the new iPod touch will allow for Group Facetime calls, and for Apple’s ARKit augmented reality apps.
Though past iPods were centered around storing and listening to music, this updated version is meant to facilitate the company’s upcoming gaming subscription service called Apple Arcade. As an increasing number of people have downloaded games from the App Store over the years, Apple decided that they ought to compile current games on the App Store along with new games into one platform. When Apple Arcade launches there will be over one hundred new games that can only be accessed through a subscription. Apple Arcade will also be launched on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV. Subscribers will be able to play games on one device and resume on others. Game features, content, and updates will all be included in the subscription and no ads will be shown during the games. The cheapest version of the new iPod touch will start at $199.00 with 32 GB. The next price up will be $299.00 with 128 GB, and the most expensive option will be $399.00 with 256 GB. It will be available in six different colors including pink, silver, space gray, gold, blue, and red.
