Billie Eilish with Denzel Curry at The Met 6/15

17 year old Billie Eilish is taking the world of pop by storm. She is on her first tour following the release of her first album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, and selling out shows across the world. Unlike some of pop’s biggest players like Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift, Eilish produces a kind of anti-pop, with a beautifully dark, sometimes creepy sound, and delicate, whispering vocals resulting in something completely hypnotizing. Eilish has amassed the kind of following other artists have taken years to earn. Her brand of anti-pop attitude and teenage apathy has grabbed the attention of her generation and launched her into mega fame. Check out the song that gained her national attention, her first single, “ocean eyes,” and my favorite from her first EP, “watch.” That dark, creepiness that lingers in her first songs comes out in full force in her album, which you can hear in her number one song on Spotify, “bad guy.” This concert is definitely expensive, especially for a first tour, but Eilish has already shown us that convention does not apply to her star power. It will be interesting to see the kind of live performance she puts on for Philly.

Opening for Eilish is Miami-area rapper, Denzel Curry. He has been writing poetry and raps since elementary school, and has developed a detailed, intense style calling upon classic hip-hop with modern beats. His newest single, “RICKY” was just released this month, and already has over 4 million streams on Spotify. His number one song on Spotify, “Ultimate,” has over 115 million streams. This is an interesting pairing for a pop headliner, but is another example of how Eilish is carving her own path and developing a brand of rebellious, expectation-defying art.
