Philly’s station for alternative rock turns 12 this year, and their birthday show is bigger and better than ever. Graduating from the smaller venues like Festival Pier, this year Radio 104.5 has booked a bigtime venue for some bigtime artists. This year’s show features The Lumineers, Death Cab for Cutie, Grouplove, Phantogram, The Revivalists, The Interrupters, and Moonroof. If you’re a Radio 104.5 fan, or just an alt rock and indie fan in general, I’m sure you’re aware of the greatness that is The Lumineers, Death Cab for Cutie, and Grouplove, so let me acquaint you with these lesser-known artists.
Phantogram has been around since 2009, creating an incredibly unique sound that is intriguingly offbeat and darkly abstract. Their unique sound has sparked the interest of many industry heavy hitters. They have worked with The Flaming Lips, Charlie XCX, Miley Cyrus on her Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Pets album, and OutKast’s Big Boi, and their work has been samples by both Kanye West and A$AP Rocky. Their number one on Spotify is their 2009 hit, “When I’m Small,” and their track, “Answer” is definitely worth a listen.
You definitely know their song, “Wish I Knew You,” which became an overnight sensation in 2017, but what you may not know is that The Revivalists have been hard at work making songs for more than ten years. “Wish I Knew You” has that enchanting groove worthy of repeat listens, and currently has over 81 million streams on Spotify. While their other tracks can’t compare on numbers of streams, they too contain that special magic that pulls you in–or maybe I’m just sucker for a good horn section. Check out their song “Keep Going.”
The Interrupters are a serious alt rock band with a healthy dose of fun and beachy vibes. Their song “She’s Kerosene” has over 10 million streams on Spotify and sounds like something you’ve definitely heard on Radio 104.5. They’ve been rocking since 2011, and have toured all over the world. Definitely a perfect fit for Radio 104.5 fans and a sunny afternoon concert.
Moonroof is a group of four buds from Philly putting out sweet mellow grooves. Indicative of Death Cab for Cutie, this band has the indie vibe down. Check out their number one song on Spotify, “Honey Honey,” and their newest single, “Home Alone.”
