The Japanese House with Art School Girlfriend at The Foundry 5/26

The Japanese House is the solo act of singer/songwriter Amber Bain. Hailing from the UK and now based in London, Bain has a carefully developed sound, with elements of mellow electronica, dream pop, and androgynous artistry. The name The Japanese House came from an experience Bain had as a child staying at a home with the same name owned by actress Kate Winslet. There Bain presented herself as a boy, earning the affection of a neighborhood girl who was then heartbroken when she discovered Bain’s “real” gender. Bain draws from this experience to question our ideas of gender identity and sexuality, and in doing so creates an androgynous space for her music. The Japanese House recently released Good At Falling, her first full-length album, featuring thoughtfully composed mellow jams from beginning to end. Listen to “Follow My Girl,” “Maybe You’re the Reason,” and my personal favorite (though not on the new album), “Cool Blue.”

Opening for The Japanese House is another British act, Art School Girlfriend–aka producer and multi instrumentalist, Polly. Her music is similar to The Japanese House with its exploration of queer identity and dreamy electronic sound, but leans more towards gothic, “twilight pop,” as her Spotify bio describes it. Basically, Art School Girlfriend’s music is the kind of dark and moody vibes you need when all you want to do its close the blinds, light some candles, and watch witchy feminist movies from the 90s. Check out her newly released single, “Come Back to Me.”
