mxdwn PREMIERE: Reliant Tom Releases New Video for Buzzy, Synth-Laden New Song “Bad Orange”

Last year we premiered a track from the electronic-rock duo Reliant Tom called “Happy Birthday” from their 2018 album Bad Orange. Today, we’re excited to premiere the video for the title track from that album, “Bad Orange.”

While the previous track we premiered was a slow-burning song that dealt in darker topics, “Bad Orange” is a much more upbeat affair. That’s not to say the lyrical content isn’t introspective or thoughtful, but as the group describe it, “Bad Orange” has a playful musicality to it, with buzzing guitars, glitchy electronics and a catchy chorus.

“‘Bad Orange’ is the title track off our latest, and debut album. We recorded the tune in shortly after the 2016 presidential election,” said lead singer and guitarist Claire Cuny. “While our album isn’t overtly political, we were admittedly very upset with the election results. I think the song is very straightforward lyrically, calling out myself as well as anyone else who could’ve been more proactive. This is the first song on the album and it is the most playful musically. It is meant to mirror the satirical way we initially viewed Trump, but the album quickly gets darker as we saw the very real and very heartbreaking effects Trump forced on our brothers and sisters. I want to be better and I wanted to write about it in a fun way that people might actually listen to.”

The duo is made up of Cuny and her bandmate Monte Weber who formed the band Reliant Tom at a DIY event in New York City. Their album Bad Orange was released in November of 2018.
