Singer-songwriter Angel Olsen has just announced a fall 29 date North American tour that will begin in Asbury Park, New Jersey and close in Denver, Colorado. This extensive tour will be supported by the artist known as Vagabon, and also comes with the announcement that Olsen will be travelling to London early next year.
Olsen’s last release was her EP Phases, that came out in late 2017, and which she toured for in early 2018. The prolific singer-songwriter also embarked on another tour later that year, where she focused on her earlier recorded material and unreleased songs.
As one of the most prominent indie singer-songwriters, Olsen has captured the attention of of a strong fan base and independent media publications. Her narrative storytelling is often a major focus, and has been praised by many for its unique style.She describes her song-writing process as very free form, however, and that into eventually flows into the greater narrative she creates.
As Olsen explains on The Great Discontent:
“I don’t really visualize anything, though, until I get into playing it, and feeling out how I want it to sound. I think about how I’m going to use my voice to best suit those words or phrases, and then I’ll record different versions of it. Sometimes they’ll be slower, sometimes they’ll be in a different key. I’ve been experimenting a lot with keys lately, because I’ve noticed that I like my lower register for some things and my higher register for others. When you do all of that, it takes a minute to get to a place that suits the song.”
Olsen’s last full length studio album release was My Woman in 2016, and it is unknown if and when the performer will release any further studio albums. In the interview with the Great Discontent, she describes the process in creating the album as one where she overworked herself.
“When I was making videos for My Woman, I was in a really inspired state, and I think it was because I was overworking myself,” Olsen further elaborated. “I don’t know if you’ve ever been in that position, where you feel like you should take a break, but all the engines are on and you know that this is the time to do it?”
