After Scotty McCaughey’s brushes with death in 2017, The Minus 5 finally announced their first new album will be released via Yep Roc Records label on June 14, titled Stroke Manor. The new album documents special moments when McCaughey was fighting with death and inaugurate a new page for the punk rock band.
Leading by Scotty McCaughey of The Young Fresh Fellows and partnering up with R.E.M guitarist Peter Buck, The Minus 5 is an eclectic and witty indie pop collective with rotating collaborators that creates pop rock. The group didn’t put out works since the near-fatal stroke of singer-songwriter-producer-performer Scotty McCaughey.
The fatal stroke not only almost took McCaughey’s life but also almost took his guitar skills and musical memory, including collaboration with The Minus 5, Young Fresh Fellows, The Baseball Project, R.E.M. and more. However, McCaughey survives in this adventure with a staunch and indomitable spirit. McCaughey started writing this album while he was in ICU and receiving physical therapy, while he was also re-learning how to play guitar. Even if he couldn’t speak coherently, he still insisted to mark down every musical idea and stream-of-consciousness notes for this upcoming album. With the assistance from Peter Buck (Beatles playlist), Corin Tucker, Joe Adragna, Jeff Tweedy and more, most parts of recording was successfully finished in hospital and McCaughey’s Portland home. Buck also inspired the creation of one of the new songs “Beatles Forever (Little Red).”
The Minus 5 also announced a three-month tour in support of their 13th album Stroke Manor. Fans can enjoy the new album and feel as if they were experiencing the ups and downs with McCaughey. Stroke Manor is now available at streaming service. Check out and share “Beatles Forever (Little Red)” lyric video below.
