The Weeknd, SZA and Travis Scott Release New Video for “Power is Power” from For the Throne

The Weeknd, SZA and Travis Scott have teamed up for the single “Power is Power” from For the Throne, an album inspired by HBO’s hit series, Game of Thrones. As a tribute to the show, which is in its final season, Columbia Records and HBO have collaborated to create the collection. The album features eleven tracks by contemporary artists from A$AP Rocky to The National. Vinyl copies of the album have nine covers, each inspired by the different crests from each house in Game of Thrones, each with a standard copy and one “fire and ice colored” copy.

Today the group has released an official music video for “Power is Power” directed by Anthony Mandler. The video features the three artists on the set of Game of Thrones along with visuals from the show itself. In a press release for the song, Mandler stated: “We’re taking established artists and pulling them into the Game of Thrones world….What I want to do is integrate the color palettes of winter, the warmer tones and match that with today’s biggest stars.”

The song itself tells the story of GOT character Jon Snow, with references to his life “born of the ice and snow,” and paraphrases Shakespeare’s Henry VI: “heavy is the crown only for the weak,” in an allusion to the tumultuous body politics exhibited in the show.

SZA and Travis Scott will both be on tour this summer, while The Weeknd has taken a break after his 2018 tour. After Game of Thrones’ major success and recent Guiness World Record for most globally demanded show, “Power is Power” is projected to be a major success, with one reporter from GQ commenting that: “The Weeknd, Travis Scott, and SZA have a song of the summer on their hands.”
