The badass indie rock group Bleached announced the release of their newest album Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough? which will be released this July 12th via Dead Oceans. This exciting announcement came with the release of their second single off the album “Hard to Kill” along with its own aesthetically pleasing music video. “Hard to Kill” follows the release of their first single off of Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough? titled “Shitty Ballet.” Additionally, Bleached announced dates for their upcoming tour between May and October of this year.
Musically, the song has a simple sound. The drums maintain a steady and repeating rhythm throughout while the rhythm guitar does the same, switching between a few chords over the course of a few measures throughout. Layered over this is a plain whistled melody that also repeats throughout. The Clavin sisters come in with their vocals shortly after the song begins. Even though they don’t display a large vocal range, their singing fits in nicely with the simplicity of the song. Their lyrics display a heartfelt struggle amongst the singer and outside factors which culminates in the line “Turns out I’m too hard to kill.” Listen to the song and watch the video here:
The video begins in front of an art deco building with a 60s font placed over the clip. “Hard to Kill” is essentially a retro throwback complete with pink lipstick, dancing legs, and handcuffs. It’s quirkiness and retro noir theme are incredibly engaging. Throughout the video, the Clavin sisters remain empowered as they fight their inner demons and come out victorious. In regards to the video Jennifer Clavin stated that to her, the song and video is about, “staring down the road towards death and realizing I needed to wake up and get out of my selfish patterns of self destruction.”
