The London-born BRIT Award-nominated spoken word artist, rapper, poet, novelist and playwright Kate Tempest shared the lead single “Firesmoke” for her upcoming album The Book of Traps and Lessons. This is her third studio album since the latest release of Let Them Eat Chaos in 2016 and the debut album Everybody Down in 2014, both albums were nominated for Mercury prize.
Speaking of “Firesmoke,” Kate explains its uniqueness for the whole album, “I think of the song like a cleansing moment in the wider context of the record, in the same way that a relationship can be a cleansing moment in the wider context of a life. A kind of a turning point. I wrote it for my woman. Inspired by her and everything that falling in love with her has taught me.”
Kate intones in “Firesmoke” alongside with bouncy and mellow music track. She chants, “I bathe in this fire/ It warms without burning/ Compels without force/ And it turns without turning the world,” It draws out a cinematic scene where she is whispering to her lover with her soul, it’s velvety, private and comfortable. “Firesmoke” is a handful of words as light as a faint breeze, but leaves a soul-stirring moment deep in the heart.
With the joint of legendary producer Rick Rubin and Dan Carey over the past five years, The Book of Traps and Lessons will be released on June 14th via American Recordings/Republic Records. Pre-order is available now. Check out the track’s lyric video below.
