mxdwn PREMIERE: She Made Me Do It Takes Us to Dark Places in New Video for “Broken Morning”

London electronic pop/New Wave duo She Made Me Do It features members of Rachel Stamp and they’ve recently released a new EP called Drenched. Today, we’re pleased to premeiere the video for the album’s second single, a haunting pop song called “Broken Morning.”

The song opens with lightly strummed acoustic guitars that are colored by subtle synth tones, creating an accessible backdrop for bassist and vocalist Shaheena Dax. While the band certainly has history of work in electronic music, this song keeps those influences largely on the sidelines, sticking for mostly straight-ahead pop-rock on “Broken Morning.” While Dax handles the bulk of the vocals, guitarist Will Crewdson’s singing in the bridge provides a welcomed change of pace and dynamics to the track.

The video features shots of the band performing in an empty room. Spliced with that footage is an alter-ego Dax, who is wearing dark make-up and has her hair slicked back and awakens on the floor of a similarly empty room, with shards of cups and other porcelain materials floating around the room. As the song picks up steam, the bizarro-Dax confronts the camera, seemingly shattering it as she sings the emotional refrain.

“‘Broken Morning’ arose from an unsettling space between anger, sadness and disbelief” said Dax. “A truly dark place filled with bittersweet melodies. The sound of a heart breaking in a cyclone of lost love and pain.”
