New York-based group the Cro-Mags have reached an agreement on the band’s name. Band member Harley Flanagan announced that he had won the rights to use the name from fellow members John Joseph and Jackie Mayson, with them now being forced to call themselves Cro-Mags “JM.” Along with the announcement, Flanagan made a statement regarding the win, stating “I, as the founder of the band and bass player on all Cro-Mags albums … will be performing as Cro-Mags going forward and have exclusive ownership of the name as such in all commercial purposes worldwide.” He continues to say “During this transition period, to confirm which band you want to see, please check on our websites or social media pages.”
According to the New York Post, Flanagan filed lawsuit in Manhattan federal court last May claiming members Joseph and Jayson had taken control of the group, claiming he had come up with the idea of the band and in 1981 but then he decided to stop touring in 2002 to help raise his son. Rolling Stone had mentioned that Flanagan also stated in the lawsuit that he’d registered the Cro-Mags trademark for merchandise in 2009, recording in 2010 and then renewing it in 2017.
Frontman John Joseph’s Cro-Mags will be opening for The Original Misfits June 29 at the newly built Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, CA alongside the Distillers, Rise Against, and the Anti-Nowhere League.
