A new album is out for rapper and producer Bun B and Statik Selektah. TrillStatik was recorded in record time, literally. According to PitchFork, 11 hours and 40 minutes is the official time it took to produce the album, which was documented during a live stream. There are appearances on the album by Method Man, Smoke DZA, Fat Joe, Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko, Westside Gunn, Pro Era’s CJ Fly, Big K.R.I.T., Talib Kweli, and more. Bun B and Statik wanted it to be an album created in real time. Making an album this way creates an authenticity and improvised style that isn’t tangible in ordinary recording. Traditionally, a song might go through several edits and a length of time until it is released. A live recording invites fans into the creative process, making them feel as though they are apart of the creation from start to finish.
A Houston native, Bun B first came on the scene in the group UGK. “International Player’s Anthem (I Choose You), a OutKast collab, was one of their hit songs back in the 90s. It was just one of their many top 20 hits. Bun B first went solo in 2005 with Trill.
Statik Selelktah has also been successful as a producer and DJ. One of the songs on his album from 2001, Population Control, “Groupie Love”, featured the late Mac Miller. Apart from his solo career, he also formed the hip hop group 1982 and is the founder of Showoff Records. Bun B and Statik are longtime collaborators that brought both their long history in the music industry and individual talents to this project.
