30 years after its release in April 1989, the Pixies are celebrating platinum status of their electric album Doolittle, which features hits such as “Here Comes Your Man” and “Hey.” This moniker has been earned due to the sale of over one million copies of the album, double that of their album Surfer Rosa, which has been certified gold. However, record sales are only a part of the legacy of Doolittle. The album’s leading track, “Debaser,” was once covered by David Bowie with Noise Band Tin Machine.
Coming off of their 2018 tour, the Pixies have marked over three decades together, producing six studio albums across eight labels, and featuring in one 90 minute documentary, loudQUIETloud, about the band’s experience. As one of the most prolific alt rock bands of the 90s, the Pixies’ have influenced not only the meaning of alt rock, but the other bands in it. Kurt Cobain had admitted to “trying to rip off the Pixies” when writing Nirvana’s track “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
Despite their brief hiatus in the early 2000s, the Pixies’ legacy has been nothing short of sensational, with themes of psychadelacy and angst that continue to break records far into their career.
