The speculations about Childish Gambino’s visual album were true and has not yet disappointed fans. Childish Gambino and Rihanna, two legendary hip-hop artists recently released their new film, Guava Island at Coachella. Guava Island was directed by Hiro Murai and written by Childish’s brother, Stephen Glover. It also stars Black Panther’s actress, Letitia Wright. The film premiered last night and will continue to play the next two weekends at Coachella. The film will also be on Coachella’s live stream Saturday on Youtube at 5 pm Pacific Time and 8 pm Eastern. The film takes place in a jungle-themed exhibit where everyone is able to fully immerse themselves in the film. The metal theater fits around 100 Coachella guests and has incredible decor. It’s around an hour long and takes you through a musical experience like never before seen at Coachella.
According to Pitchfork, the tropical thriller opens with Rihanna’s character, Kofi explaining how she fell in love with the other character, Deni. Deni is played by Donald Glover (Child Gambino) who eventually becomes a celebrity on the island. Deni sings songs for Kofi while they are growing up and he wants his songs to create a community on the Island. Kofi and Deni begin to start dating, but complications persist when Deni decides to create a music festival on the island. He receives threats after he proposes the idea of having a festival on the island, causing him to have to make a decision between choosing himself or the island’s community. The film includes Gambino’s songs, “Feels Like Summer”, “This is America” and “Red’s Cargo”. Overall, Guava Island emphasizes how music can create community and even political revolution.
