In celebration of Loretta Lynn’s upcoming 87th birthday, acclaimed artists Jack White, Margo Price, and Darius Rucker and more performed in honor of the country music singer-songwriter. The tribute took place on Monday, April 1st and it was Lynn’s first public performance since her stroke in May 2017.
At the celebration Jack White and Margo Price performed a raw and lively rendition of Lynn’s “Portland, Oregon.” Not only did the two sing together, but White shredded on guitar while Price played tambourine. Price effortlessly hit the high notes at the end of the performance while White amped up his guitar playing to match her energy. White’s singing was uncut and scratchy but it was quite fitting for this performance. Even with Price being many months pregnant the two were able to pull off an amazing performance. White also performed “Have Mercy” for Lynn. Both “Have Mercy” and “Portland, Oregon” are off of their album Van Lear Rose.
For the last 60 years, Lynn has made up a central part of the backbone of country music. Her perfect pitch and classic country twang bolstered her popularity. Songs she’s made such as “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough (To Take My Man),” and “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ on Your Mind)” made their way into becoming country standards. Her influence on the country scene is massive and she has shaped the genre for the better.
Most Recently Lynn released her newest album Wouldn’t It be Great. This album is her 41st studio album and marks over 60 years since her first album, Loretta Lynn Sings, was released. Wouldn’t It be Great is a wonderful addition to Lynn’s collection of albums and maintains her classic country sound but with interesting twists and beautiful chord progressions. Lynn was recently named Artist of a Lifetime by CMT in 2018. Her real birthday is on April 14th and the country star will be turning 87.
