Interpol Announce New EP ‘A Fine Mess’ out 5/17 + New Single “The Weekend” + World Tour Continues

Manhattan-based rockers Interpol have plans on releasing an EP, entitled A Fine Mess, full of five new, original songs. The extended record will be released on May 17th through Matador Records, home to artists like Belle & Sebastian, Julien Baker and Car Seat Headrest. To accompany the announcement, the band released a new track “The Weekend,” which is available on all streaming services and for purchase.

The new project was recorded back in upstate New York with Dave Fridmann, while production was taken control by Kaines and Tom A.D. and mixing came from Claudius Mittendorfer, who had previously worked with the indie rock band on their 2007 album Our Love to Admire. This new project emerged as a short, but complete body of work with an overall narrative and consistent flow for its listeners.

Their new song “The Weekend” comes just two months after the band released the EP’s title track late January. The song focuses on a relationship that blossomed over a weekend and being caught up in the euphoria of it al. From the echoing vocals of frontman Paul Banks to the crashing drums, Banks sings “Say goodbye Lorena to the beach / Heaven knows the week was bombing / By the weekend you were here / Asleep in my arms.”

A Fine Mess will come out not even a full year since their last album in 2018, Marauder, which served as the band’s first complete record in four years.

The artwork for the new extended play comes from a series of lost images that were recovered from an abandoned police station in Detroit, MI. “In a crumbling evidence room – amongst the rubble – an undeveloped roll of film, dated “1-20-96,” featured latent images of a breaking-and-entering scene, the rooms in chaos,” according to a press release.

Right now, the band has been on a worldwide tour and will begin their U.S. leg on May 1st in Morrison, Colorado at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. For right now, check out the EP cover art and tracklist below.
