Brooklyn’s Afropunk Music Festival has announced the lineup for its upcoming 2019 event. Taking place on August 24 and 25, the event will feature performances from FKA Twigs, Santigold and Gary Clark Jr. Afropunk has become known worldwide for its music festivals, with events each year in cities such as Johannesburg and London. The festival is known for its efforts to raise awareness for various social issues, this year going with a theme of “WE SEE YOU.” The idea behind the theme is providing a platform to discuss those living under oppressive regimes around the globe. In addition to this aspect of the festival, Afropunk will be holding its SpinThrift Market, showcasing goods made by Afropunk’s extensive DIY crafter community. Other performers at the festival will include Leon Bridges, Kamasi Washington and J.I.D.
Electronic singer FKA Twigs has been announced to be one of the headliners for Brooklyn’s Afropunk festival. Breaking through with her debut album in 2014, FKA Twigs has combined electronic production with R&B style vocals to create really unique music. The album, titled LP1, brought with it the track “Two Weeks,” which is the singer’s most popular thus far. Over the past few years FKA Twigs has established herself as an up and coming voice in the music industry, and her performance at Afropunk will be one of the highlights of the weekend.
Also performing is pop singer Santigold. Known for her hit song “Disparate Youth,” the singer has been releasing music for a decade. One of the most interesting qualities of Santigold’s music is the strong reggae influence present in her songs. Her last major project, I Don’t Want: The Gold Fire Sessions, was put out last year. The singer is sure to give one of the best shows of the Afropunk festival.
Guitarist Gary Clark Jr is also set to perform at the festival. Making a name for himself for his extremely talent with a guitar over the past decade, Clark has been busy performing with some of the most famous acts in rock music. His work opening for tour dates for bands such as The Rolling Stones and The Foo Fighters served to gain him a strong fanbase over the 2010s. The musician’s most recent album, This Land, was released at the end of last month. The album was supported by the song “This Land,” the title track and only single for the project. Clark is known for putting on powerful performances with his guitar, something fans at Afropunk will need to be sure to see. UPDATE (8/21): Afropunk Brooklyn has added Alabama Shakes vocalist Brittany Howard for a solo set at the festival. She will headline on Sunday, the final day of the festival.
