With her debut album release fast approaching, indie artist Ioanna Gika has released a new track titled “Swan”. The song follows Gika’s previous single release for “Roseate”, as well as a music video for “Out of Focus.” Her debut solo album Thalassa will be dropping April 5 via Sargent House and it incorporates Gika’s Greek heritage as it is named after the spirit of the sea in Greek mythology.

“Swan” is a beautifully arranged track that was inspired by Gika’s mourning over love and her struggle “with the need to let go.” It opens slowly and dreamy, before building up with layers of sounds and Gika’s powerful voice. Speaking on the release, the Greek-American singer states that it is in reference to “the sinking feeling when you sense a relationship is coming to an end, but you are powerless to stop it.” And the lyrics complement the sad and haunting sounds, reflecting the “suffocating purgatory” that Gika successfully recreates.

Ioanna Gika is a Greek-American singer who is also one of two members of the indie rock band IO Echo. She is also behind the songwriting for Tokimonsta’s “Estrage” off of the Grammy nominated album, Lune Rouge. This year, Gika will be supporting alternative rock band Garbage during a short Spring tour in support of her Thalassa release and will also be touring parts of Europe.
