This week, the 50th anniversary of the renowned 1969 Woodstock music festival announced a star-studded lineup that includes the likes of Jay-Z, The Killers, Janelle Monae, and Brandi Carlile. The festival, named Woodstock 50, will be held in Watkins Glen, New York, from August 16 to August 18.
In an interesting turn of events, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will also returning from their break at this 50th anniversary celebration. In 2017, it was reported that the American folk rock band was taking an indefinite hiatus after lead singer Alex Ebert felt that the “Edward Sharpe” character was exhausted. At that time, Ebert was also venturing out on some solo projects. Now, with the band listed on the card for Woodstock 50, it is clear that they have returned from their hiatus.
Ebert has been creating music in a wide array of genres for more than 20 years. Apart from the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros project, he has also played in the power pop group Ima Robot and has also put out a solo album in 2011, titled Alexander. Just last year, Ebert released three EPs as part of his In Support of the 5ame Dude project.
Woodstock 50 is set to be a massive celebration of the legendary festival that transformed music and culture. Organizer Michael Lang commented on the “eclectic” nature of the lineup, which includes multiple genres from multiple generations. Other notable names include rising star Maggie Rogers, the iconic Santana, Chance the Rapper, and the soulful Leon Bridges. Tickets for Woodstock 50 will go on sale April 22 and can be purchased through the festival’s website.
