Bryce Dessner Shares Classical New Work “Haven”

Bryce Dessner, the accomplished composer and member of The National is set to release a classical album, El Chan which features three distinct works: “Concerto for Two Pianos,” “El Chan,” also for two pianos, and “Haven,” for two pianos and two guitars. “Haven” is an eight minute piano ensemble which produces a translucent yet steady flow throughout.

Dessner has said that “El Chan,” is dedicated to Babel and Birdman director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu. The two previously collaborated with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto on the score for 2015’s The Revenant. Per a statement, Dressner says, “The work is inspired by the mythical guardian spirit, ‘El Chan,’ of a pool of water nestled in the canyons close to Iñarritu and [his wife Eladia] Hagerman’s hometown of San Miguel de Allende, in the stunning Mexican landscape, and which has been the source of popular legends for many centuries. Iñárritu in turn created the cover artwork for this new album.”

Dessner recently won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album (The National – Sleep Well Beast) and has collaborated with noteworthy artists from Alejandro Iñárritu, Paul Simon, Sufjan Stevens, Caroline Shaw, Bon Iver, Justin Peck, Ragnar Kjartansson, Nico Muhly, as well as Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Dessner is known to many as guitarist and founding member of the Grammy Award-winning rock group, The National.

Other forthcoming highlights of Dessner’s creations in-concert include Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), a major new 70-minute work for 10-voice choir and ensemble which explores the profound impact and influence of the master photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe, and which will be premiered by the LA Philharmonic in March 2019.

Kelly Tucker: Originally from Los Angeles, I grew up listening to all types of music. My first concert was Aerosmith with Skid Row, then moved on to concerts with Metallica, Lollapalooza, Guns N’ Roses, Soundgarden and more. One of my favorite shows of all time was when I was in college and someone took me to see the Allman Brothers play. I also scalped a ticket to see Pearl Jam and the amazing Eddie Vedder sing his heart out. My professional career started in 2000 at Nielsen Business Media where I was an assistant in a sales department and later got promoted to advertising account executive. When the recession hit in 2008 and the magazine was sold, I took a job at a call center and later got promoted to assistant to the CEO and COO of a global company. In 2017, I took a position at a pharmaceutical agency, and now currently responsible for coordinating meeting logistics for physicians and pharma reps throughout the United States. In my spare time, I work at Peace4Kids a non-profit in South Los Angeles and write screenplays in hopes to make a breakthrough.
