Anderson.Paak just released a new single, “King James” from his album, Ventura set to release on April 12, 2019. Ventura will feature artists André 3000, Smokey Robinson, Brandy, and the late Nate Dogg, among others. He released an LP, Oxnard last November and album, Malibu in 2016. This new track, “King James” is a jazzy track about uniting and standing up against injustice.
Anderson remarks on his two albums, Oxnard and now Ventura: “Growing up in Oxnard gave me the grit and the church to find this voice of mine. One town over I went further and found my depth. The duality of each place inspired me greatly and from that I made two albums at the exact same time but held one back because that would have been too many songs to perform live for you all! I like ending things on an even number so welcome to Ventura.”
Paak has a tight relationship with legendary rapper and producer, Dr. Dre. In fact, he performed on six songs on Dr. Dre’s 2015 album Compton and two on The Game’s The Documentary 2.5. Anderson’s success is on the rise, especially with his release of Oxnard and single “Bubblin” which went on to win him a Grammy for Best Rap Performance and an appearance on Saturday Night Live performing “Tints” with special guest Kendrick Lamar. Dr. Dre was executive producer on the album which is a homage to Paak’s hometown in California.
He co-wrote two songs on Christina Aguilera’s sixth album, Liberation in 2018. Paak will also join Tame Impala in performing at Coachella. In January 2016, Paak spoke with Scott Simon of NPR’s Weekend Edition Saturday about his tumultuous background as a child of mixed-race parents, that the “.” in his name stands for “detail”, his apprenticeship with Dr. Dre and how all of these influences shaped his music. In 2016, Paak was named one of the XXL Freshmen, along with Lil Dicky, Desiigner, Dave East, Denzel Curry, Lil Yachty, G Herbo, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, & Kodak Black.
Paak announced new tour, titled “The Best Teef In the Game Tour” with his band, The Free Nationals. The tour will be supported by Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, Earl Sweatshirt, Noname, and Jessie Reyez. He will make stops at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago and much more.
