R. Kelly Is Granted Release From Jail After Paying Back Over $160,000 in Child Support

R. Kelly has been released from jail as of March 9, according to Pitchfork. He was released after paying over $160,000 in back child support fees, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

Chicago Tribune reporter Megan Crepeau confirmed that Kelly had paid six figures in child support fees and would be released within the hour. A Cook County Sheriff’s Office representative later confirmed that Kelly was no longer in their custody.

Notably, Kelly did not pay the $161,633 bond himself. The bond slip does not show who posted the bond, and this individual wishes to remain anonymous.

Kelly turned himself in to Chicago authorities on February 22 after being charged with 10 counts of alleged aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving several underage women. He was released three days later upon posting a $100,000 bond, a mere 10% of the $1 million bail set by the judge.

Although rumors about Kelly’s alleged sexual abuse of women have been swirling for years, everything came to a head with Lifetime’s docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly.” Kelly maintains his innocence.

Kelly is scheduled to reappear in court on March 13.
