Guitarist, singer-songwriter Molly Burch blesses Austin with two shows before heading out for the rest of her First Flower tour, spanning two continents and four countries. First Flower, released October 2018, delivers dreamy indie pop tunes filled with empowerment and dark love vibes.
The first track on the album, “Candy,” opens with the line “Why do I care what you think?,” which is reflective of Burch’s entire album as her work refuses to define her by the regiments of a certain genre. In her femme-anthem, “To the Boys” she sings, “Can you listen carefully? I know what you want me to be, and I never will” again reminiscent of box-breaking, female-empowerment. First Flower was obviously a deeply personal work for Burch as themes of love and heartbreak underlie many of the tracks, making listening to the album evoke emotions ranging from rage to complacency.
Molly Burch’s hazy vocals over otherworldly tunes supply a whimsical indie-pop vibe sure to carry listeners to another planet. Although born in LA, she’s definitely making a name for herself in the local Austin music scene – landing the cover of The Austin Chronicle for the debut of First Flower and playing at the famous Austin City Limits festival in 2018. Her sultry performance is a unique spin on the classical pop-y vibe, definitely worth seeing before she goes on tour. She plays at Stubb’s this Saturday, March 9th for just $6!
