Chaotic thrash punk for nihilistic skaters
Pure Drivel by Kicker thrives on pure chaos. This rambunctious group from Oakland, California is an accumulation of multiple members from various other groups (Notably Neurosis, Dystopia and Operation Ivy). The lyrics and general vibe of the album have a very nihilistic viewpoint. Despite the record’s aggressive guitars, punchy vocals and racing bass runs, the group maintains a twisted and hilarious sense of humor throughout the project. The aggressive, fast-paced tracks are perfect for skating or even workout music. It has all the potential of getting your blood pumping without the distraction of dense lyrical content.
“I Can’t Sleep” starts off with interesting heavy guitars hanging on the backbeat. As these guitars pound along, the bass explores a wide run higher up on the neck. The somewhat monotone vocals are a double-edged sword. On one hand, it is easy to lose the lyrics in the noise, but on the other hand, they add a nice layer to the track’s fast paced rhythm. In addition to the monotone vocals, there are no real bridges or breaks in this track. This repetitious approach to songwriting allows the band to really drive home their main ideas. This track is a constant onslaught of chaos that eventually engulfs the listener.
“Pure Drivel” has a nice thick and nasty bass tone. Surprisingly, the bass carries the main melody for the track. There is also a catchy call and response section on this track between the vocals and guitars. This section really makes this track feel like a collaborative effort rather than an isolated idea. This sound bit starts with a rant about how useless the phrase ‘thoughts and prayers’ is. This sentiment perfectly showcases two things. Firstly, it shows how misinformed the general public can be about general politics. In addition to this, it really reveals the band’s nihilistic approach to music. Hearing all the sound bits together allows the listener to understand the band’s sense of humor very well.
“Goodnight and Fuck Off” is the perfect track to end the album. The track echoes the following viewpoints: “Life sucks. People are stupid. We are all going to die someday.” So, what a better way to end the album than to sing the lyrics:
“Ladies and gentlemen, it’s been a pleasure spending the last hour with you all.
Now on the way out, if you would like to visit our merchandise stall
and buy some over-priced crap, that would be great;
and be safe on the way home.
Goodnight and fuck off. Thanks for coming mate.
I’ll see you on the front line fighting against something we hate.”
Overall, Pure Drivel by Kicker is a bit difficult to listen to, but there is some appeal in the band’s apathy and humor. Many listeners may find it difficult to get past the monotoned vocals, but one can easily find elegance in the inspiring bass melodies presented across the record. The album’s title may reflect the album well for some listeners, but for a select group of people, it will certainly not. Pure Drivel is certainly thrilling even with all its challenges. It showcases strong lyricism, impressive performances and most importantly, a lot of heart. At the end of the day, that’s all listeners can ask for.
