Thrasher Announces Death Match SXSW 2019 Day Parties

Fans of punk/rock/metal and everything in between will have a chance to come together at SXSW 2019 when Thrasher Magazine returns to Austin for their free showcase Death Match presented by Vans.  Thrasher Death Match will take over Weather Up for possibly three day mosh pit. Back for a consecutive year, Thrasher Magazine had taken a couple of years off before last year’s SXSW leaving fans absent and searching for a showcase that was solely dedicated to the rock/metal/punk genre.  Some of the bands scheduled to make fans ears’ ring are; Krimewatch, Austin’s own The Black Angels, Dana Dentata and more.

Dana Dentata, who was a frontwoman for Dentata, a metal-punk bank has reinvented herself and gone solo taking on the name Dana Dentata.  Her music now more hip hop influenced still has a punk sound with her album DANAVI$ION. A former exotic dancer, she wants to make music for dancers by a dancer or as she calls them “stripper jams.” She calls stripper jams as “sexy, empowering songs that girls can dance to on stage that aren’t about bitches all up on some rapper.” Though her music doesn’t have the full metal-punk sound as before, some of her idols have influenced her sound, including Marilyn Manson and Eminem. She says about Manson and Eminem, “those two have this hard, unfilterd aggressiveness about them that I’ve always been very drawn to.”

The Black Angels will have a familiar feeling of their surroundings as they play infront of their home crowd of Austin during SXSW .  The band from Austin known for their pyschedelic sound, have used today’s present and former social media platforms (remember Myspace) to build an audience.  From their use of various platforms they were able to become an underground success leading them to tour the world and playing music festivals including the first Austin Pysch Fest (now Levitation). Though there might not be much recent work from them except a demo from last year, they keep their presence known in their home city.

Attendees of Thrasher Death Match who are unfamiliar with Japanese punk will have a chance to get their first taste of the scene when Krimewatch takes the stage.  Frontwoman Rhylli Ogiura sings both in Japanese and English and combines her hip hop influence to mesh with her bandmates’ more traditional punk background.  Although only releasing a demo album in 2016 they have made a name for themselves in their hometown of New York City getting booked for gigs in the area and beyond all the way to Austin.
