Andy Gill of the rock band Gang of Four was hospitalized recently following a chest infection. Gang of Four, one of the most influential bands of the 1980s, was set to perform on Monday in Brooklyn for the last show of their tour before having to cancel last minute due to Gill’s illness. The show was not cancelled until the last second due to the fact that the band had thought Gill would recover in time for the show; with the opening band, Public Practice, performing as scheduled before the rest of the show being called off.
Gang of Four has had a long legacy in rock music, with the group changing its lineup consistently throughout its existence. The most recent iteration of the group is currently getting ready to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s debut album, Entertainment! The tour that Gang of Four had been finishing up was in support of that achievement along with being to promote their newest album, Happy Now, which debuted at the start of February.
Gang of Four was wrapping up a US tour that began at the start of the month, and afterwards the band was set to fly out West to do a series of shows in the Pacific in March. As the last remaining original member in Gang of Four, Gill is the heart and soul of the group in the eyes of many of its oldest fans. The band was sad to have to cancel the show and not finish the tour, but they needed to prioritize the health of the group. In a statement issued following the show, the band stated that refunds would be available for all who bought tickets and promised that next time they came to New York, Gang of Four would be at peak performance. Hopefully Andy recovers soon and the group is able to come back as soon as they can to put on a great show.
