PUP Give Fans a Tutorial in New iPhone-Shot Video for “Free At Last” with Finn Wolfhard Cameo

With a new album called Morbid Stuff coming out in April, Canadian punk band PUP has shared the video for their previously-teased new song “Free At Last.” The band released a teaser video featuring the song’s lyrics and a basic chord progression, challenging fans to create their own version of the song before ever hearing it.

The results are pretty spectacular, with 253 covers submitted. You can watch every single one here – but you might want to check out the new video first. The band, by the way, expected no more than two dozen submissions. Their video is a bit of a love-letter to wide range of musicians that provided a video of their cover, from solo bedroom guitarists to hardcore groups, who are grouped together in the video’s intro. One band even covered the never-before-released song at their own gig. The appearances are layered to give create a montage version of the song – and it’s impressive how close many of the submissions were during the chorus. Finn Wolfhard of Calpurnia and Stranger Things makes his own appearance, leading the song into the chorus.

The video proper features the band performing the song in a bit of a mock tutorial video, providing the lyrics to the song and the chord progressions. Between shots of the band members, those same fan submissions are played over by the real song, adding to the band’s tribute to their fans. All the while, the band uses some lighthearted, old-school visual editing to inject themselves into the scenes, including a moment when the four members are green-screened onto the footage of a shirtless Andrew W.K. looking guy, dancing along to the rambunctious song.

Morbid Stuff is out on April 5 through big-time punk and hardcore label Rise Records. They’re also going on tour all spring and summer, so check them out while they play Canada, the UK, Europe and the United States.
