Slated for a May 2019 release, Johnathan Rice’s upcoming album The Long Game will be his first album release in six years. The Scottish-American singer-songwriter’s last release was his 2013 LP titled, Good Graces. Since then, Rice has been busy with several external projects, including scoring and writing for the Anne Hathaway movie, Song One, between 2013 and 2014. Rice also released a holiday track last year called, “We Won’t Be Lonely This Christmas,” which addresses the Trump administration’s child separation policy and features Courtney Marie Andrews.
The Long Game’s release also comes with his newest single from the album, “Below The Deck.” It is 1 of 10 songs from Rice’s latest EP that is said to be inspired by the slow unravelling of a 12-year long relationship of his. Rice was encouraged by producer Tony Berg to record the album entirely on his own, which he did. The songs are expected to reflect his rawness and vulnerability, with some “wry humor woven throughout”, and will also provide listeners a peek into his relationship, from beginning to end.

Besides working on alternate music projects over the last few years, Rice has also expressed his creativity elsewhere. In 2017, he released a poetry book, Farewell, My Dudes: 69 Dystopian Haikus, that received wide acclaim and praise from several notable names in the entertainment industry. W Magazine also labelled him the “beat poet of the Instagram generation.” The Long Game will be released on May 10, 2019, and Rice’s tour dates for 2019 are expected to be announced soon.
