Michelle Obama surprised attendees and audiences of this year’s 61st Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California. The former First Lady of the United States made an unexpected appearance at the beginning of the award show alongside Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, and host, Alicia Keys.
According to PEOPLE, Obama took a short break from her massive book tour to support her close friend, Keys. The five women took the stage for a segment that saw them discussing the pivotal role that music has had in their lives so far. Obama, who was met with an ovation from the audience, insightfully shared that “music has always helped [her] tell [her] story,” and that it “allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in.”
She eloquently ended her speech to an ecstatic crowd saying, “Music shows us that all of it matters – every story within every voice, every note within every song.” Watch the full segment of Obama’s surprise appearance below.
