Varg Vikernes is one of the pillars in the history of black metal with his one-man band Burzum having a profound influence on future purveyors of the dark, caustic sub-genre of metal. He also has had a profound affect on the way the general public views the genre of black metal, what with his convictions for burning down churches (he denies) and murdering his Mayhem bandmate Euronymous (he says it was in self defense).
Unsurprisingly, when Jonas Åkerlund (who was a member of Swedish black metal band Bathory) made a new film about the genre and scene, Vikernes would be a major player. And unsurprisingly, the musician had something to say about it when it came out according to Consequence of Sound.
Vikernes took to Youtube – where else – to vent his frustrations with his portrayal in the film. Bizarrely, it begins with the infamous vocalist singing the chorus from Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” before acting as if the video caught him off guard. In the video, he states, “So, you just watched the Lords of Chaos, the film where they have a fat Jewish actor play the role of me. I’m Scandinavian, by the way… So, the fat Jewish actor said things in that film that I never said in real life; he did things that I never did. He did things for reasons that I never had; knew people that I, in reality, have never even heard about.”
The video’s got some marginal production value, about to the level of the typical Youtube conspiracy theory video – lots of awkward cut scenes, fast-scrolling text, and completely out of place “thoughtful” piano music. All the while, he appears to be shooting the video from dark room, very reminiscent of Blair Witch Project.
Then, Vikernes takes it even a step further, using the classic reverse-racism card to debunk the story that’s been told in Lords of Chaos. “The whole film is just made up,” said Vikernes. “As you probably know, the whole film is just a character murder and they completely ignore the facts … When you at one point realize that this film is just a lot of made-up crap, I suggest you contemplate around the concept a little bit and understand that I am not the only one in history who has been exposed to their character murder. Character murder is a common weapon used by people who don’t like Europeans.” He’d likely prefer the reader pay no mind that the film was written and created by four Europeans – Dennis Magnusson, Jonas Åkerlund, Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind.
